In its position of host to the next G8 meeting in Gleneagles (Perthshire) and having the Presidency of the EU, the UK Government wants a Marshall Plan for Africa. This is the 'hour' of Africa. Over a century ago and using the same metaphor, Daniel Comboni was campaigning for Africa throughout the European Courts and philanthropical associations. Among the great evils that were destroying Africa was the terrible scourge of Slavery.
Appalled by the state of the African people, Comboni wrote his 'Plan for the Regeneration of Africa' summarised in the words 'Let Africans save Africa'. He went as far as lobbying the cardinals taking part in the 1st Vatican Council… His heart never stopped beating and feeling for Africa.
Today, with the same urgency, it is up to us, citizens, to put the politicians on the spot by campaigning, lobbing, protesting for their litany of broken promises...
If we could stop unfair trade and the sale of armaments, to provide instead support for health, education, transport, housing, and sanitation…
If donor aid is withheld to Governments who keep on investing a lot on military expenditure and not on the basic needs of its people: access to sanitation, water, and electricity, free education, agricultural policies.
Yes with a mentality to bear the brunt we will obtain the next generation of HR: peace, environment, and debt relief.
